In the last draw of the next-to-last day before playoffs, Denmark's Angelina Jensen was upset 4-3 by Russia and China survived a determined Italy with a last-stone 10-8 victory.
Meanwhile, Debbie McCormick of the United States continued to struggle with an 8-7, extra-end stolen loss to Sweden, and Japan's Moe Meguro continued to push for a playoff spot with a 7-2 victory over a thoroughly vanquished Scotland.
Only single points were scored in the Denmark-Russia tilt, which saw Russia's Liudmila Privivkova steal the final end to bump her win/loss record to 4-5. Denmark fell to 6-3.
China's Bingyu Wang fought a see-saw battle with Italy and dropped two late deuces to trail 8-7 in the 10th end. Italy's Diana Gaspari, who had a strong game, missed both her shots and Wang made a simple takeout for three points and the win.
China sits at 8-1, tied with Canada, and a game ahead of Switzerland (7-2). Gaspari fell to 1-8, tied with Scotland.
Japan, Sweden and the United States are all tied at 5-4 and may be in contention for a tiebreaker, depending upon the results of Thursday's final three draws. The morning series will see the United States battle Switzerland, Denmark take on Canada, Japan meet Germany and Italy clash with the Czech Republic.
