Kaitlyn Lawes' team from Winnipeg took three in the fifth end and then four in the eighth to subdue former champion Michele Jaeggi 8-7 in the final round-robin draw. Jaeggi's final steal of two points was meaningless as Lawes' last takeout removed a third and potential tying Swiss counter.
The Canadians finished at 5-4 along with the Danes. The winner of Friday's 2:00pm (Central European Time) tiebreaker will meet Russia in the Page 3/4 game.
""it was great, everyone played really well tonight," said Lawes.
"You have to stay so patient in this game. We played our game (tonight) and took advantage with the hammer.
Lawes was philosophical about her team's up and down week.
"This whole week (the team) played really well," Lawes said. "We've just lost some heartbreakers.
"Now we're starting to come on a little stronger, and that's a good sign."
Sweden's Cissi Ostlund confirmed first place after a ninth-round 6-3 win over Japan, and Scotland's Eve Muirhead grabbed second place with a 7-3 thrashing of Norway. Both teams finished at 7-2 and will meet in the Page Playoff 1/2 game, with the winner advancing to Sunday's final.
Russia, helmed by 2006 World Junior champion Liudmila Privivkova, defeated Denmark's Madeleine Dupont 7-6 in a battle of 5-3 teams to qualify for third place. The Russians will meet the winners of the Canada-Denmark tilt.
Dupont had a chance to score three in the final end and tie the match, but her draw finished far off the mark and she only scored two.
"I don't know what it is, we mostly play a good game but then it's always followed by a bad one," said Dupont, the 2007 World Women's silver medallist. "It's crazy.
"This morning was a good game, now this one was terrible, so tomorrow will be a good one again."
The men's ninth and final round-robin draw goes Friday at 9:00am CET. All tiebreaker and playoff matches will be webcasted by Curlingkanalen.se, with the semis and finals also webstreamed on Eurosport's Swedish channel (semis March 8 at 1400 CST and the finals March 9 at 930 and 1400 CST).
