OSTERSUND – 10 junior men's and 10 junior women's teams will compete for the 2008 World Junior Curling Championships as play begins Sunday in this Swedish city. In women's competition, Scotland's Eve Muirhead returns to defend her world championship title. Muirhead and teammate Sarah MacIntyre represented Scotland under skip Sarah Reid in 2007 and defeated Canada in the final for the gold. Muirhead now skips the team. Canada (Kaitlyn Lawes), Russia (Ludmila Privivkova), Denmark (Madeleine Dupont) and Switzerland (Michele Jaeggi) are expected to contend. Privivkova, the 2006 World Junior champion, also captured the 2006 Le Gruyère European Championship. Dupont has competed in four World Junior championships, finishing third in 2007, and was also the 2007 World Women’s runner-up. Hosts Sweden are skipped by Cecilia Ostlund. Germany is represented by Fredericke Templin, Norway by Anneline Skarsmoen and the United States is represented by Nina Spatola. Last year's junior men's champions, Canada, are now represented by William Dion of Quebec. Canada has won the past three WJCCs in a row and a record 16 overall. They will be challenged by 2007 playoff qualifiers Chris Plys of the United States, who is making his third consecutive appearance, and Rasmus Stjerne Hansen of Denmark. Both skips scored 6-3 round-robin records a year ago in Eveleth, Minnesota. Other contenders include Scotland's Glen Muirhead, who returns for his second straight championship, Sweden's Oskar Eriksson, China's Jialiang Zang, Kristian Rolvsjord of Norway, Switzerland's Manuel Ruch, Daniel Neuner of Germany and Krystof Chaloupek of the Czech Republic.
