FÜSSEN – Norway and Sweden are into the finals of the 2007 Le Gruyère European Curling Championships.
Oslo's Thomas Ulsrud continued his remarkable unbeaten string at 10-0 with a 7-4 win over Denmark's Johnny Frederiksen in the "Page" playoff match between the top two squads. Ulsrud moves into Saturday's men's final, while Denmark drops into Friday night's semi-final.
In women's play, Sweden's Anette Norberg upended young Lene Nielsen of Denmark 8-4 to move into her sixth Euro championship final in the last seven years. The Swedes missed last year's Le Gruyère tournament entirely, and captured gold at five straight Championships from 2001 to 2005.
"This is important to us," said Norberg, the 2006 Olympic champion and two-time world champion. "All we are going for here is gold, nothing else will satisfy us."
Ulsrud heaped praise on his new front-end tandem of Christoffer Svae and Havard Van Petersson.
"They really impress me," said Ulsrud. "This is their first big event in the men's division, and they're playing great and acting cool. I like the spirirt."
Svae and Petersson each have two World Junior appearances to their resume. Third Torger Nergård won World bronze with Ulsrud in 2005, but may be better known as Pål Trulsen's alternate when the famed and now-retired skip won Olympic gold in 2002.
Denmark's Nielsen drops into the semi-final against Scotland's Kelly Wood, who beat last year's Euro bronze medallist Mirjam Ott of Switzerland by a 9-6 count in the women's "Page" playoff between the third and fourth-ranked teams. The men's semi features another Scottish team, as David Murdoch also defeated Switzerland, skipped by Toni Müller, 9-4 in the men's version of the three versus four match.
Both Swiss teams dropped big four-enders in their games. Ott surrendered four in the fifth end for a 6-3 deficit, while Müller's draw against four Scottish counters in the second end blinked red, indicating a hogline violation, which is electronically monitored. The rock was pulled, the Scots scored four and held a shocking 6-0 lead.
"Stuff happens, that's curling," said Müller, who made his debut appearance for his country at the Europeans and impressed with his fourth-place finish.
Müller liked it, too.
"It was a very good week for us," said Müller. "I'm very happy we qualified for the quarter-finals and I hope this will help us beat these guys again, and give them big problems."
Müller was gesturing to teammate Ralph Stöckli, the alternate chosen to join the team after he lost the Swiss qualifying final to Müller. Stöckli was thrown into the lineup when the team was 3-1, and played third the rest of the week, the same position he played for Andreas Schwaller a year ago in their gold-medal teaming.
"He's a good one," Stöckli said of Müller. "He's a real wild gun, I think he's going to be a big problem for my team in Switzerland. But that's great for the sport in our country, for sure."
The women's semi-final is webstreamed live on Eurosport.com and CurlTV.com at 14:00 GMT, with Eurosport TV coverage beginning at 14:45. The men's semi-final starts webstreaming at 19:00 GMT, with Eurosport TV coverage beginning at 19:30. |
