Canada pads lead in World Curling Rankings Print E-mail

Glenn Howard's stunning performance at the 2007 Ford World Men's Curling
Championship on home ice in Edmonton has vaulted Canada into top position in the World Curling Rankings.

Canada now has 1200 points and the next highest finisher is Scotland/Great
Britain, with 782 points. Scotland/Great Britain rose one placement despite
Warwick Smith's disappointing 4-7 record in Edmonton.

Third-place United States has jumped two positions with a total of 779 points.
This is virtually the same result which followed the 2007 World Women's Curling
Championship in Aomori, Japan, where Debbie McCormick's team finished 7-5. At
Edmonton, unheralded Todd Birr won the bronze medal after an 8-5 performance,
the second U.S. podium finish after Pete Fenson's bronze last year at the
Olympic Winter Games in Turin.

Norway dropped two placements to sit fourth, Finland dropped one to rank fifth, Switzerland held steady in sixth position, and Germany, which scored silver in Edmonton under the leadership of Andy Kapp, is now in seventh position.

Rounding out the top 10 are Sweden, Denmark (which climbed two positions at the expense of New Zealand) and Italy.

The World Curling Rankings track and list the success of all 46 Member
Associations of the World Curling Federation at competitions including the
Pacific Championships, the Le Gruyère European Championships, the World
Championships and the Olympic Winter Games.

Points are assigned for top-level placements at each competition, with lower
point values assigned for events dating from the previous six curling seasons.
