Canada's Charley Thomas became the second junior men's skip to win back-to-back world titles today, while Scotland's junior women won their first global crown in a decade as the World Junior Curling Championships concluded in Eveleth, Minnesota. Thomas's team from Edmonton, Alberta routed Sweden's Niklas Edin 8-3 in just eight ends Sunday to earn its second gold medal in two years. Both golds have come with wins over Sweden in the final. "We were prepared to play attacking or defensive curling," Thomas told reporters. "The Swedes attacked from the first end and we played along with that strategy." Canada and Sweden traded points until the sixth end, when Canada scored three to pull away. Earlier Sunday, Switzerland took the bronze medal with a 7-6 win over Denmark. In the semifinals, Canada scored eight times in the final four ends to rout Denmark 8-2 while the Swedes crushed Switzerland by an even larger 11-2 margin. Thomas, supported by Brock Virtue, Matthew Ng and fellow 2006 champion Kyle Reynolds, became just the second junior skip to win gold in consecutive years, the other being Canada's John Morris in 1998 and 1999. In the women's final, Scotland won their fifth junior women's championship with a stunning come-from-behind victory over Canada. Sarah Reid took a single point in the ninth end to trail Stacey Devereux 6-4, but then stole two points to tie the match and force an extra end, before finally stealing the 11th frame for a 7-6 win. "We thought we had it, but they are good team and did not let go," said Devereaux. "They kept plugging away at us and we made a couple of mistakes, which they took advantage of."Reid's victory was shared by teammates Eve Muirhead, Barbara McFarlane and Sarah Macintrye. Scotland's last junior women's title was earned by Julia Ewart in 1997 In the bronze medal game, Denmark scored three unanswered points to end the podium hopes of round-robin leader USA, 8-6. In the semis, Canada thumped the Danes 10-6 while Scotland edged the host United States 6-5. |
