Canada, USA win global university championship Print E-mail

Hosted at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games venue, the 2007 world university games were a rollicking event filled with the highs and low of competition.

The stories ranged from the Swedish men's team, which captured bronze despite a three-man effort after one athlete fell to illness, to the debut of Cameroon's men's and women's teams, a first for the African nation, who competed in an exhibition game before a large crowd of boisterous fans.

In men's play, John Shuster's American squad defeated Great Britain's John Hamilton 9-4 in the men's final, thanks largely  to a big four-ender scored in the sixth end of play.

Sweden's Sebastian Kraupp defeated Canada's Steve Laycock by the same score for the bronze.

On the women's side, defending champions Russia, skipped by 2006 European Champion Ludmila Privivkova, lost the final 6-5 to Canada's Brittany Gregor. The Canadian skip Gregor made a last-rock draw to the four-foot to win the game with Russia lying two.

In the bronze-medal game, Japan's Moe Meguro edged Sweden's Stina Viktorsson 7-6 to take podium honours.
