Fresh off the success of the recent Pacific Championships hosted in Tokyo, third-place Japan held a two-team trial competition to determine their representative at the World Women's Curling Championships at Aomori, Japan in March. Team Aomori, led by skip Ayumi Onadero, originally won the right to represent Japan at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games (where they finished a sixth) as well as the 2007 Women's Worlds. However, the departure of Onadero and third Yumie Hayashi from the team led the Japan Curling Association to declare the best-of-five trial event. The December 16-17 trial was held at the Tokoro Curling Hall in Tokoro, Hokkaido between Team Aomori and Team Nagano, the 2006 runner-up. Two draws were played on on Saturday with a maximum of three scheduled for Sunday. After splitting both Saturday games, Team Aomori won the first Sunday match to take a 2-1 lead in games. However, Nagano won the second Sunday match to force a final game, and also led that game 2-0 up to fifth end. However, the patient Aomori squad tied the score, stole a single in the seventh end and then another three in the eighth, and won the title 6-3. The highlight of the trial was coverage from national television broadcaster NHK, with more media attention continuing the excitement from the Pacific Championships. Japan has its home team confirmed for the Women's Worlds, March 17-25 in Aomori: Skip - Moe Meguro |
